Blog #2: My story. . . and first interviews!

  • before interview, establish purpose
  • Good solid background of interviewee - avoid extraneous details.
  • Research hard facts beforehand
  • make sure each question is relevant to your purpose

I'm thinking of launching a story with the main premise of: Why should politics matter to the vast majority of high school students, who cannot vote? I could possibly do the campaign volunteering thing and speak to actual politicians on the subject. Ask them why they got into politics, particularly what they thought of it as a teenager.

OR Eastern trail. What it signifies to us as a community, what people think they will use it for in the future. That would mostly involve interviewing people ON the eastern trail, and possibly calling someone from a planning comission that set up the Eastern Trail? I don't know. That would require RESEARCH!

There was already an Eastern Trail story by Ian last year, I vote for the voting story! It would be so cool to have the elections and their impact or lack of impact on teens covered!

Here is contact info for two alums if you decide to go that way:

    Dear Hope,

We were wondering if the Carpe Diem or individual contributors for the Carpe Diem would be interested in volunteering for the campaigns of Linda Valentino for State Senate and Justin Chenette for State Representative. Linda and Justin are both Thornton Academy graduates, and have been actively involved in the Saco community for years. We found your organization through searching for community groups in Greater Saco/Biddeford, and thought that your group might be interested in increasing political engagement in this area.

If the Carpe Diem would like to volunteer for an evening to make phone calls, do data entry, or help Linda and Justin canvass the area, please let us know. Likewise, if individual members are interested in volunteering, we welcome them to contribute in shifts of two or more hours--we are flexible in scheduling around school, work, and other commitments. We plan on having a raffle at the end of the election season to thank our volunteers for the work and hours they have put in for us.

For more information or to set up times to come in, please email us at votevalentino@gmail.com, or give us a call at 205-0077 (cell) or 282-5527 (home). We thank you in advance for your consideration--we truly could not do this without you!

    Sincerely,

    Linda Valentino
